Volkswagen Sued in Canada

for Alleged Violation of Environmental Protection Law

According to foreign media reports, on December 9, a Canadian government agency said that German carmaker Volkswagen was sued in Canada because the company imported nearly 128,000 cars into Canada that violated the country's environmental laws.

The Canadian Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) said that Volkswagen has violated the country's environmental protection legislation by importing vehicles that do not meet emissions standards into Canada, so the company faces 60 charges, including two "misleading Information "allegations. The Ontario court will hold a hearing on December 13.

A Volkswagen spokesman said the company would fully cooperate with the ECCC investigation. "At the hearing, the parties will submit a proposed guilty resolution for consideration and seek court approval," he said.

In 2015, the agency also launched an investigation into a number of Volkswagen vehicles, as they were allegedly equipped with "reduction devices" prohibited by law. The agency said that in this incident, the efficiency reduction device was software that reduced the effectiveness of the emission control system during normal vehicle use.

Sources in 2015 said that Volkswagen used the device in vehicles to cheat in emissions tests. The move has caused Volkswagen to lose € 30 billion (about $ 33 billion), including fines, vehicle modifications and legal costs, and the incident has also led to resistance to diesel vehicles worldwide.
